POETRY

and various other musings by John Christian

All work no joy

Work for money
Two sets of rules; only different opportunities
Wonder, do you fair well here
With all the handicaps you have got
Slave for fun
When will you have delight in two different cages
Don’t listen to the howling
It may call you in and then …
All work no joy

Work for money
Impotence – you will never admit to it
If all you have is what you need
In your backyard; your family tree
Never mind the pain
No Joy
Two sides to every face
One only does it for the purse
Cannot be satisfied until it is over
Two different attitudes each opposing and then …
All work no joy

Work for money
There are no rules; only uneven opportunities
One alternative exception
Can found seen through your stare
Dance for life
Above all remain pacified
Do not mistake that cage for more
Its worth is directly proportional to the time spent
Looking for the open door and then ...
All work no joy

attack decay sustain release

How many lives do you need to entomb
Before the button is pushed and the dance starts to loom
The ruling class rules just as well as before
But with a different arrangement holds your face to the floor
No longer elementary – no way to deduce
With random behaviour the elite suck the juice
This is propaganda – this is freedom of speech
We will never surrender – we will unite and defeat
Attack, decay, sustain, release

Help destroy the order that creates the illusion
Of democracy that pacifies the mind with confusion
Must be a safer way to survive on this sphere
Without destroying each other with hatred and fear
It does not seem to matter that your minds are controlled
Without even one question you perform as you are told
There is nothing held sacred in your life anymore
With hardly a choice you are forced to act like a whore
Attack, decay, sustain, release

Why are we asked to believe in a solution
Where the government and money work together in collusion
Everything is owned by the crown or the state
Every living person should revolt before it is late
Demonstrate your anger – expose them to your wrath
Squander undeniable issues in the path
The fear is not in knowing, the fear is what you find
Tucked away in silence in the politician’s mind
Attack, decay, sustain, release

animal in me

It is so dark I cannot see
Tension caused by the animal in me
Glazed eyes and frothing at the mouth
Driven by an anger lurking near about
I cannot talk; only breathe
Backed to a corner is the animal in me
I am wild, you cannot take me alive
Do not try to tame the animal in me

And so my life has run to seed
Inspiring the animal in me
Cold sweat and bearing teeth
Far into the regions of insanity
I cannot dream; only feed
Devouring the animal in me
I am mad. You have now been warned
Into a rage goes the animal in me

art and man

Each picture has a special colour
Each picture has its own splash
Each picture has its artists’ stake
Each picture has its own effect
Each picture is an understanding
To him the man on common ground

Each picture has its own story
Each picture cries out to be touched
Each picture steers a silent face
Each picture lives in higher esteem
Each picture is a living being
To him the man on common ground

Each picture is its own number
Each picture has a single breath
Each picture has a soul in motion
Each picture has a thought possessed
Each picture is a work of art
To him the man on common ground

a god or a beast

The state exists in order to make it possible
for religion to take hold of morality.
This is embedded in nature
and completely thought conceived.

The family exists to bring about a security
in its form as a tribe.
This is embedded in nature and
without a thought to conceive

The religion
The state
The family
The tribe
Manifestations of the divine

Banana boats come
dead baby arrive

Wake me up early every Monday morning
Walk up to the beach and with hardly a warning
I am forced to find work in the factory
To try to make a living for my family ... but
Banana boats come; dead baby arrive

So I wander around the docks in search of an occupation
I am sure I will find some work with my dedication
I am stupid for I have never learned from history
I will have to find another way to be free because
Banana boats come; dead baby arrive

I walk up to my hut and there’s no food on the table
My woman says to me ‘John, see if you are able
To try to get a job at the armory
Today’s military advancements offers opportunities, since…
Banana boats come; dead baby arrive.'

So wake me up early every Monday morning
I'll walk up to the beach but I will give you a warning
What you are about to see is part of a design
While the rest is still the future waiting for the time when
Banana boats come; dead baby arrive

Be as one

The smell of coffee in the air
I will recall all the places I have been
As I read and laugh I am left
Wondering if life will let me hunger on forever
I will soar through time - then I’ll be as one

So I stretch out my hand
Place my fingers in the center of my mind
And then I will know
How it feels to love and want
In the very same way that I
Need and want and love
I will see through time - then I’ll be as one

Be as one
By the lake under the sun
As I know what I know
I will be as one

I will not give into lies
Their sole purpose is to trample down
And dance upon smiles
But this world is so much brighter
Where loves resides in the hearts of those
Who serve as a reminder
That at the end of time we’ll all be as one

Caligula Dies

Naked beauty befuddled mine sight I’m awakened
Common interrupted solitude lost in his face
Disfigured and demented languished by the silence
All relations are recalled; dependent on death
What virtue is this when it is emulsified by pity
After the madness Caligula dies

Leaving behind, tired, one hand is clapping
Ageless are the marks on the wall; is this creation?
Founded on sin which this empire is built on
Stops at nothing for without has become within
Gluttonous whore, inbred, cast to the demons
After the madness Caligula dies

Culture torture

Culture scratching; urban instinct
Pagan pagan; crawling around crawling around
Will you concede again – dream of body and soul
Distorted dissonance contorted on a cross
Culture beware this is a nightmare
Culture diving; further under
Banshee banshee; wailing around wailing around
Will you not sing again – touch effeminate cry
Tied to a beast with fire for its eyes
Culture beware this is a nightmare
Culture intake; power curbed on
Demon demon; robbing around robbing around
We'll sacrifice again – burning out of control
Spike for the fit ensures the blood to flow
Culture beware this is a nightmare
They torture you – they torture me

Come to me

A thousand angry bombs they fall
Upon a thousand foreign shores
A thousand bunkered generals plot
The gravestones of a thousand more
Come to me my darling one
We'll build our castle in the sun
By the shade of the maple tree
I know one day that you will come to me

One hundred men do barely sleep
They march through paddies six feet deep
An unknown schedule to keep
As death claims all around their feet
Come to me my lovely one
Leave not what's been left undone
By the willows near the sea
That day is soon that you will come to me

Ten soldiers walk a jungle track
One hundred pounds upon their back
Their eyes show more than they can tell
They lived their lives on earth in hell
Come to me my only one
The time is near; it has begun
By the way you look at me
You're telling that you will come to me

A lonely mother cries in vain
Another soul expires in pain
A single soldier cries to sleep
And prays the Lord his soul to keep
Come to me my lonely one
And we'll find pleasure in the sun
By this winding road we'll see
One day you will come to me
Come to me my darling one
We'll build our castle in the sun
By the shade of that maple tree
I know one day that you will come to me

Clothespin in the sea

Stop the truck and pull over
I feel a little bit too sober
Must be the last thing I ate
That brought me back down
And if you feel our descendents
Have been given independence
You've got your words taken down
Wrapped around a clothespin in the sea

Jules Hanon played the system
He hired a veteren
He knew how to be with himself
While acting the same
Though one night did find when
He built his world around him
Jules Hanon with a gun
Blew out his brains

I will scream and shout
You won't hold me down
I am insane
I play a mean guitar and
I'm bound to go far
'Cause the people will buy anything

And in these situations
I have been known to make decisions
Of a kind you all like to see in a film
And if you feel our descendents
Have been given independence
You've got your words taken down
Wrapped around a clothespin in the sea

Dark eye

You occupy yourself
Behind your money hide
We have seen it all before
Laid clear against the door
There are no religious ties
Alone religious lies
You have bitten the hand that feeds you
Convinced you are ordained to....
Walk the earth on high
With the limit only sky
You are completely hypnotized
With a finger in your eye
Torment your body find
Extortion in your mind
You rest with proper cause
Limbs shackled to the wall
Make the present last
Lest you confuse it with the past
And for the future trust the omen
The premonition is the warning
Live with the social cause
And consort with an evil lot
In the hopes of gaining sight
Remove your finger from your eye

Darkened skies

The rain it holds no questions
As darkness fills the skies
This place where death is erupting
Complete the raging lies
It is not for us to judge it
Cantankerous on high
I will take you on a journey
To touch the darkened skies

The fields are filled with fire
Reaching for the sky
Burning with angered power
Remind us of the lies
Of those who came before us
Their souls are touched by hell
Contented with their absence
Reminded by the smell

The rain it has the answers
It spills out of the sky
And now unto the city
The people choke and cry
There is no explanation
Our journey has come to be
The past is now the future
If only we could see

Dream

You cheat; I plead; it weighs me down
The soul and strain have not been found
To try is want of hope
To give accept and cope
The final trials have now rebound

This legion of my loyalty
Reminds most that they are not free
Envision as you pray
Only then the courses lay
To be at peace or just to be

This fading strength I call my own
Will not protect you when I am gone
I see it in a dream
Before me so serene
When I awake I know there is one way home

So go and dream and fear no more
No one will uneven the score
It is not what you conceive
It is more what you believe
Then by the dream you reach the core

endless chapters

I have burned another bridge while living in the past
I have felt the loneliness of love
So I sat down and drank my wine and wrote for me this song
To sing to all of you from above
Some people say I have got it made up here on the stage well…
They can go to hell they don’t know my mind
Because what I do is not so hard
Especially when you cannot tell
If it is really art or just a waste of time

So tell me what you’re thinking – is it just a blank reflection
Of the words which I am spewing out at you
Inside this cage I hide myself and traded in my freedom
I don’t know if it is really worth the wait …anyway
It just might be too late

I have had another life sometimes I can recall
I used to be a little boy at home
I played the beat out on the street and learned to do it well
I had my share of secrets as yet untold
My father said don’t be a fool; make some other plans
How can I be proud of what you do?
But I pressed on with faith in song and
Looked around my world
And felt I had to get my message through

Am I so unapproachable – obscure in every thought?
Have I frightened you off by now?
I know I am a little mad but crazy is my game
Still afraid to move without a sound

So tell me what you’re thinking – is it just a blank reflection
Of the words which I am spewing out at you
Inside this cage I hide myself and traded in my freedom
I don’t know if it is really worth the wait …anyway
It just might be too late

everything is gone

I had me a job, got me working all the time
I had me a house, so beautiful and clean
And in my house I had everything I needed
Provided by the job I had uptown
It was heaven, you know, the great Canadian dream
My family and I had it made in the shade
But then one day things began to change
The borders were open and jobs, well, they ran amuck
And since then, let me tell you, everything is gone

Now at first it didn't seem to affect me at all
But more and more there was less and less to do
Pressure in my house had my love grow weak
I felt lost and so uncertain of my life
It was hell, the end of the great Canadian dream
My family and I were being traded for something free
And then one day I was told I had no job
And now I am blamed for doing what I was told to do
So now you see how it happened that everything is gone

Well I say why don't more raise up in anger
There is no one who wants to live this way
To lose your job because they are going under
And they are going under because they cannot survive
The competition is tremendously unequal
Governments do not care if you live of if you die
We line their pockets with the money we work hard for
And when we are done they throw us all away
If you open your eyes you will see that everything is gone

feeling like a shah

Surrounded by these foreign walls
Feeling like a shah but never really exiled
We feel we need no strategy
The element of thought is only there to hurt you
And if you try you find one fat man
Telling you 'Son, you've got no chance.'
But that you cannot bear to hear
What they are telling you to buy

The bottom of our cage, it seems
Is filled with broken dreams
Would be nice if they got swept up
Then we could live monotone
Life would be so perfect
We would die only when we had to
But if you ever see the tragedy
So swollen up inside – you will feel that
Living is so painful
It is much easier to die

It has been noticed that the more we hide
The more we lie
The more we find we have to hide
The more we lie

I see you walking past the doorway
With your clothes all tightly fitting
And you step on us so lightly
You cannot stop to play the game
You are waiting for an answer
From my cynical opinion
Can you not feel that you are still dreaming
Isn't all of this the same
As an inter-spacial contact
Between two foreign bodies
They wait to shake your hand (turn around)
And stab your back
I need to feel your reason
Why don't you keep on counting
Only then can I adorn you
With the wisdom that you lack

Surrounded by these foreign walls
Feeling like a shah but never really exiled
Our heads are filled with solitude
Capturing the silence only there to guide you
And if you try – you find one mad man
Telling you 'Son, you got no chance.'
But you cannot bear to see
What they're telling you to be

final act

All this wild unending chatter
Is enough to drive me wild
All the clashing and the crashing
And the smashing and the bashing
With a din to wake the dead
Everyone has lost their head

Rolling lurching pitching tossing
On a rough and stormy crossing
Staggering stumbling toppling falling
In all directions calling
With a din to wake the dead
Everyone has lost their head

And repeating and repeating
Like a thousand hammers beating
To a din of horrid orgies
In a fiend’s infernal forges
With a din to wake the dead
Everyone has lost their head

floating

I look to the sun
And when I do it turns my way
But I am still on the run
And when I stop all will fade away
I look into the night
From the murky dusk to the glowing dawn
And when I awake
I realize the sky is not gone

I look to the sun
And when I do it turns my way
But I am still on the run
And when I stop all will fade away

from all sides

You cannot face too many feelings that you bear
From all sides your reaching hands and sprawling hair
And the sad sigh away through the pain of the day
Exploding into emptiness and decay

You cannot face too many feelings that are trim
From all sides in the lake you learn to swim
Now the feeding starts here; the dreams of the lair
The situation calls for all to stand clear

You cannot face too many feelings unaware
From all sides rows of tailored silvered nails
This forgotten sound I sit cross-legged on the ground
Sense the features of the pattern I found

Clouds wearing oak; flowing tied to dull despair
From all sides a small child cries and melts away
The hour draws near; the youthful self is not here
Forced the mind-coloured sound in my ear

You cannot face too many feelings that you bear

frankys and marys

Frank, he tells us that he is ready to jump
Says his life is down in the dump
No, do not end up like him or you are done
Even if you do not use a gun
I cannot imagine life to be such misery
When you know that it is worthless to continue
Call it heaven – call it hell – call it anything
Where we are now is what we belong to

Mary hangs on to each lonely day
Says she would love to find a way
A man will come to her and say
Where have you been…OK
Now though she is getting bigger all the time
In front of the mirror she has to lie
Working overtime, she hangs on to her mind

Frank, he jumps – he is ready to die
Now he wishes he was able to fly
There is no way that he will survive
He hits the pavement with a tear in his eye
Mary worries if she is growing much too old
To be able to love without being cold
She stumbles through the door
A bottle helps her keep the score

And so I say goodbye
To the Frankys and their lives
They never did make me cry – only sick deep inside
And the Marys – they are the fool
To let their souls get cool
When people all in all
Alone divided we will fall

for the moment

For the moment everything is fine
As you read the poems that no longer rhyme
Comprehending less but never left behind
In the state where things crash to the floor
That is where you will not see me score
We have been there and there is no need for more
Elevation talks – that is when I want you

For the moment everything is cool
I would not want to be known as the fool
Living, giving, breathing – breaking every rule
All the talking without action is ignored
Take as much from love as you can afford
In the end you will find your heart behind a door
Elevation talks – that is when I want you

For the moment everything is right
An alarm has sounded but there is no need to fight
Comprehending more as we hold on tight
In a state where everything becomes aglow
Where what is learned is all that is and that I know
Then next the two of us connecting to the flow
Elevation talks – that is when I want you

from of old

At one stroke I forgot all my knowledge
I found no use for artificial discipline
For, move as I will, I manifest the ancient way
