POETRY

and various other musings by John Christian

Sharpen The Shadow

And so once again
The hero finds himself a friend
Far away from his home
Building castles by the shore
Twisted wreckage burning still
There to keep some love on chill
The hero’s gone, bring in the next
After all aren’t we the best

Come along on this sunny day
But be careful don’t give yourself away
The plastic warriors melt the sky
As they ruin your one alibi
A cable snaps you hear it fall
Now on the ground I’ll meet you all
Shorn against the hero’s will
The shadow’s sharpened for the kill

This cause is here to stay
A new world order is on the way
Now across the line we stand
As we now remove our hand
Place the rock back where we found
The enemy is all around
This then is my story told
Believe only the truth hold

Some Thoughts Before I Go

I sense you looking in here
Although I’ve not the eyes
To try to see your colour
Your cut of dress or size
I do not like religion
Nor attempts to have it show
Your favourite things envelope me
Some thoughts before I go
I am at a disadvantage
Although it is my choice
You have glimpsed what makes my person
And heard my inner voice
Laid bare for your inspection
Myself I offer so
With a deep comprehension
Some thoughts before I go
I did this all in hoping
That you might leave behind
A couple of your daily cares
And eased your daily grind
If by chance you hear about
The one that makes us glow
I hope you tell a friend of yours
Some thoughts before I go
For simple things of gentleness
Can bridge so many miles
Are really all it takes
To reap rewards of smiles
For if a single tender thought
Should I chance to go
To smooth a furrow brow
Some thoughts before I go
If what I have shared by some chance
Ease a burdened mind
Or random acts of kindness
Soothe a worry left behind
Then my day is better for
The things that I have known
Kinder hearts are all around
Some thoughts before I go

Space Angel

Well let me tell you people when I was out in space
I became frantically elated – there was a smile upon my face
My limbs had long stopped moving
My mind became quite numb
I felt my capsule drifting inching nearer to the sun
Then along came this young lady
She made her way into my room
She said she’d stop me from thinking I was on a path of doom
She said she was the Space Angel
A nd soon I would understand
I was now about to experience her secret master plan
And with this she started floating and bouncing off the wall
With her little wings a’flappin’
It wasn’t long before her fall
Then she picked me up and squeezed me
And then she held me to the light
The sun was shining brighter now
I knew I had to fight
I say ‘Hey, you Space Angel, now who do you think you are?
You come crashing into my capsule acting like you are a star.
I don’t know how I should tell you but I think it’s plain to see
That you really are a domey and not what you appear to be
Well come on Space Angel let me see the things that you do
I’ll take you down and bend you over and try your act on you”
Now the Space Angel took the beating
She took it tied and true
And when her trial was over she swore she’d start anew
I freed her from her bondage – the air was getting thin
And then a musky odour I started to breathe in
I felt intoxicated – I had been dealt an awful blow
To be defeated by the Space Angel with nothing left to show
So let me tell you people next time you are out in space
And if your capsule is drifting to some far off unknown place
And if by chance some young lady
Comes crashing through the door
Calling herself the Space Angel
And what she has come there for
Remember my warning to you – she’s as evil as evil can be
Beware the name Space Angel
You don’t want to end up like me

Spirits On The Move

While the pastime of our lives has been around
With our spirits on the move
And in the misty day old smoke filled nights
Searching for our lead balloon
A mirror helps us to check for our bites
Sell your love in a rented room
I came to you hesitant – a prisoner of where I’d been
They say we need to feel the edges of our soul
It seems to me incorporate
Love and fear and disillusionment
Hold me to the inner wall
Don’t let go
My outer ear explodes and weakness weeps
Destined for the loneliness tonight
Pleasure seeps inside our lives
We start to glow
It’s really happening you and I
I can’t explain the feeling that’s been with me all my life
However empty now it’s done

Still Quite A Juvenile

He is fighting a war all by himself
And you know that he won’t turn back
You know that he won’t give in
When he believes he is right
He is sitting alone in his hotel room
Holding his keys real tight
Thinking about last night
Was it in his sight

They told him that he is already able
To overthrow any design
How can you run with a knife in your back
Hold onto hope – he just wants to go back
To the life that he left when the chance to win was defined

So he is going away – perhaps he will stay
When in his heart he issearching for a home
Complete with the girl next door, two kids and a car
Years are rolling along still he’s singing his song
They tell him that he’s going far
One day he will become a star
Or at least he has tried

No reason to get optimistic
Serenity is just a disguise
He’s wild inside – still quite a juvenile
Give him some time – he’ll commit every crime
In the book to show us he’s alive

Now he’s taking his time – he’s got her on his mind
Though she may be far away
He’ll be with her for good one day
This he has planned
But for now he must try to make it inside
Opportunity a glance away
Each time he reaches for a day
The light seems to fade

Suddenly A Dog

Walking in the twilight corner of my eye
Waiting for that punch clock’s angry smile
Not aware of what I am about to see
Forced into the action and I catch him looking up at me
Germ activated day saying neon prayers
My head is full of caffeine, cocaine and stares
Parelleling in between the chrome machine
Suddenly … a dog appears – he’s mean
Walking in the street the haze has left my eye
Missionaries burning across the sky
Desperation, segregation alternation on my mind
And then suddenly … a dog puts me out of time

Suffix

Captain of the east side
Ride free until sunrise
Come a day when you will subside
I have seen the mocking of the holy man
Knock him down
Teach to Earth where you have been today
Courts of justice cannot put you away
Treason on the high tide
Ocean is back and you began to dry
Feet wet and a sore side
The thorns around your head gave a reason
For your alibi
Teach to me where you have been today
All that hatred cannot put you away
Spend your life within all time
Just keep in touch with the other side
I have been told that you are forced to hide
People, don’t you see the holy man has committed suicide
Teach to Earth where you have been today
Our reason has put you away

Shallow

Deep in the shallow - they place us underground
Stand on the gallows - where then you will be crowned
Stir up the hollow - you will be ever bound
Choose who to follow - and don't make a sound

Done so heavy gauges Done so many pages
Done so empty wages Done so shallow cages
Done so crippled sages Done so angry rages
Done so proper stages Done so living ages

Deep in the shallow - where you work for life
Until tomorrow - your only way is strife
It's a fiasco - but put away your knife
The better way then - is to realize

Deep in the shallow - you find a sordid pile
Each breath you borrow - each grave that you revile
Don't sit and wallow - don't learn the ways of guile
Even Apollo - obtained a better style

Deep in the shallow - they place us underground
Stand on the gallows - where then you will be crowned
Stir up the hollow - you will be ever bound
Choose who to follow - and don't make a sound

Still Asleep

Still asleep – eating a rat
Still asleep – your face on the rocks
Still asleep – quick to react
Still asleep – your eyes to the floor
Still asleep – you’re still asleep
Still asleep – chasing a dog
Still asleep – your hand in the mud
Still asleep – slow to recover
Still asleep – your arms to the sky
Still asleep – you’re still asleep
Still asleep – you're never awake
Still asleep – your body in chains
Still asleep – you're still asleep

Swing

Swing sway
Reflect extreme
See discreet
Swing sway - Swing sway
Swing the mighty pendulum
This is the way of the beast
Swing sway - Swing sway
Swing like a leaf in the wind
This is the way of love
Swing sway
Reflect extreme
Reflect the image of yourself
This is the way to observe
Reflect extreme - Reflect extreme
Extreme heights of absurdity
This is the way to delusion
Reflect extreme - Reflect extreme
See discreet
See the principles at work
This is the way to the stars
See discreet - See discreet
Discreet and silent we walk
This is the way to the heart
See discreet
Swing sway
Reflect extreme
See discreet
Swing sway

Symmetry Of Force

(an excerpt from 'Civil Disobedience' by Henry David Thoreau)

A man laid out alive and standing.
Already buried under arms.
Not a drum was heard. Not a funeral note.
Not a soldier discharged his farewell shot.
A mass of men to serve the state.
But not as men but as machines.
With their bodies they are standing.
Free from any moral judgment.
Marching in admirable order.
Does this keep a country free?
Be judged by effects of your action.

Take Another Look

Take another look at where you might be growing up today
Be thankful for what you have a pray
For the people of the land – they will have to stay
And see what power – must then face them
Eliminate them – re-educate them – re-ordinate them
Find the fine line between our love and his
Children spying, dying, trying at our fingertips
And wherever you do look it is easily missed
Come feel what power – must then face them
Procrastinate them – re-institute them – re-vitalize them
Have another - Have a shot – fill your propaganda lot
You have started something you are able not to finish
And succumb to thought
Take another look around – see how big we’ve grown
You cannot lie by telling me you would not cast the stone
‘Cause here in heaven we all need sensations overblown
And know its power – must then trace them
Coagulate them – re-intricate them – incriminate them

That's Where I Want To Be

Talk to me in twenty years
Hell, do you think I’ll remember
I think I read these lines before
Some time ago when I was still planned for
Man of war take your toll
Keep the fort well standing
And don’t you let me see you cry
Christ, you know it ain’t manly
I can hear you say
You want to get away
Hope to see my journey last
Don’t need anyone to guide me
For if it ever comes to pass
Where the hell would they be
Soldier boy drop your toy
Do not listen to your master
Before I die I will have to cry
Though for now I will just drown in laughter
I want to be free
That’s where I want to be

The Children Have Got A Kingdom Of Their Own

Everybody is running around
Trying to find a piece of ground
On which they want to live upon
And keep to their very own
Every time you look and see
The anger burning up in me
Tell me what you want to be
Me, I am different
No man has got a kingdom
No man has got the time
No man has got the answer
That has been written down in rhyme
I have seen man breed shallow empty feelings
Forgetting to bestow love upon themselves
But no man has got a kingdom of their own
No child has got the wisdom
No child has got the means
No child has got the question
That has been answered in his dreams
I have seen children playing in fields
Share their love which is real
The children have got a kingdom of their own

The Fool

To know and not act upon it
To love and yet live in fear
To think and go on unknowing
To doubt and walk straight ahead
The fool is always distracted
And does not understand why the rest of us are free
If only for a moment set the mind alone to see
Lock the doors and put your cares away
The fool is gone – there is no need to pray

To seek and turn from the truth
To talk and not be heard
To run and end up backwards
To live and dream no more
The fool is never quite finished
And does not have the mind to reject all that is wrong
There is no accounting for the fact each day life goes on
Trust your heart and leave your tears behind
The fool is gone and water is turned to wine

To work and not earn a living
To eat and not be fed
To laugh at nothing funny
To cry when joy is all around
The fool is inside us all
And don’t deny it when you see
Don’t be afraid to bend
Don’t fall down on your knees
There is more before the end
After all it is wisdom that will be your closest friend
Calm your mind and even out your breath
The fool is gone and let life be the test
One more time … repeat … the fool is gone

The Luthier

The player wears the helmet
The Luthier plays the tune
Entice themselves with fancy lives
Dancing on the moon
Now here I sit abundant
My face there is no sign
Still the Luthier strums his target
Aiming for my weary mind
He hits is deep – he strikes it low
I cannot make it pass
The Luthier has always been mellow
After smoking all my grass
In the family – in the family
He has told me all along
In the family – in the family
Is where you are going to find love

The Mailbox

The people have seen a wish down the river
Forever they have been alone together
And besides the weather
What makes the mailbox rattle at night
I have seen a lot of anger – I have seen a lot of pain
I have spent years inside it and the people just the same
It all helps me know
What makes the mailbox rattle at night
Allow me to feel that wish down the river
Tell them to wait until I can be with her
For besides the weather
What makes the mailbox rattle at night
The morning seems to be the same
It hasn’t changed since yesterday
The rain still beats down hard against my door
If I awake I will be afraid
Now is not the time
I hear me say
I have already felt the rain
I need no more
I hold the covers to my chin
The rain still beats down harder on my floor

The people have seen a wish down the river
Forever they’ve been alone together
And besides the weather
What makes the mailbox rattle at night

The Way

Hooray for all the diplomatic
Fools believers in the human race
Their name shall so endure
Don’t you know that I maim boy
Don’t you know that I maim
Caressing in philosophy
The world we struggle in it seems
To contradict in all it sees
Don’t you know your own name boy
Don’t you know your own name
Every time we close our eyes
The fear creeps into open skies
We see it flashing past our eyes
Don’t you know who to blame boy
Don’t you know who to blame
We’ve all been told what is our fate
There’s communists in every state
Yet all we do is hesitate
Don’t you know that you’re lame boy
Don’t you know that you’re lame
Now that we have come to this
Demanding for our golden kiss
Yet don’t know what it is you miss
Don’t you know it’s the same boy
Don’t you know it’s the same
Claiming that you’re turning blue
From lack of love not shining through
The clouds that linger over you
Don’t you know when it rains boy
Don’t you know when it rains
The Way is cast and in we crawl
By Way we enter it at all
The future’s bright let’s have a ball
Don’t you know it’s the Way boy
Don’t you know it’s the Way

The Wound Of Time

A little further on
A little more to come
More to see, more to know
more for those in need to go
Come to tend the soul
Come to heal the wound
Heal the wound of time
Time that is never mine.

As we are in time
Time is what we know to be
Time is then, time is now
All is what the soul is not
Now we come to rest
Rest of soul, rest of peace
Peace of mind at last
Peace that wipes away the past

Through in time we ride
Cooling on the side of free
Breathing in and out in time
Find the center of the mind
Impermanent this time
This we realize but still we
Hang on for the time to lead us
No time to make it mine

I believe there comes a rest
A slowing down in spite of all
Time is now compressed
Peace is what it’s made to be
Keeping centered will
Carefully though ruthlessly
Time and peace collide
In the end peace prevails.

The Answer

The answers to all your questions
And questions and questions and questions …
Of somehow succeeding
Of honing the instinct
Of hunting the future
And questions and questions and questions
Of finding the answer
And questions and questions and questions …
We fold our hands before going farther
We fold our hands before going farther
We fold our hands before going farther
We fold our hands before going farther
And questions and questions and questions …
Of problems of time
Of misguided interest
Of practical knowledge
And questions and questions and questions
Of finding the answer
And questions and questions and questions …

Toxin

Bring back the toxin which once was the king
Completely repugnant and unable to swing
Spread all the toxin throughout the hillside
This is the only way to be satisfied

To hell with your toxin I will not obey
You can teach me no reason
By night or by day
Your imputed pomposity betrays your preserve
In maintaining an order that we all deserve

Bring back the toxin to which all must submit
A breach of the order one will never commit
Enjoy this toxin as it steals from you time
You've entered on our count the end paradigm

You can say what you will about the toxin you boast
I will never give in - I will stay by my post
Your toxin is deadly - your thoughts are maligned
The world I imagine is not in your mind

Through The Eightfold Path

To see the self which is the self
Despite the self not be the self
Outside the self inside the self
To know the self as in the self
Project the self unto the self
Without the self unite the self
Knowing the self to be the self
To see the self which is the self

Veil Scar

Who is the madman when he is riding on a star
Who is the madman with the bomb inside his car
Tell me who are the madmen who are lost at sea
Well it is not me; No, it is not me
They took my knife away and they burned all my belongings
I didn’t have a chance to say
W ith all the fighting and the brawling
I could have had my mind at stake
But I could not have known it
I finally got the right way to play
And my agent said he sold it

Who is the madman when he is sad and all alone
Who is the madman when he is to fight to keep his own
Tell me who are these madmen who keep us all below
They just want to let us know where we belong

I have been around the other side of town
I have never tried what the others found
To be a wondering exclusive erotic pleasure
For us all as I go down
Between the walls of here and now
Lovers battle for a piece of solitude
Among themselves so proud
To be a member of a well known crowd in school
Tell me teacher did I learn to live
Tell me teacher what you have got to give
Avenues of life never lead me back to the place I met my lover
I got my money made; placed it near my grave
Have I come this far to be a slave of hate
Realize the safety of your ideal world
Don’t let it take you down beyond what you have earned

Hangman coming to cheat your loving
Morning mother never could save me
Sense the humming of your cousin
With her mind away starting to feel me
I am not able to see the light
And it makes me fight

I go calling; I’m so rotten
Meditate upon a torpedo
Here too often to play the cousin
Run up and down the street
There is nobody to move me out
And it makes me fight
Rush right back to the limit

Masquerade your soul in hatred
Ask not for what you seek
Pretend the one above you is watching
As you lay your head to sleep
Come out to where the fairies are
To count them in the street
Although their actions are quite harmless
Their legacy’s to beat in the street where you sleep

Papayas growing in the midway
Guard your pennies well
Destroying fashion in the making
Head is spinning – who can tell
Because what people have us buying
We take all in deep
Throw what you have found in the cellar
Of your casket where you sleep in the deep

I have found myself to be your antagonist
In this cold forgotten land
Prepare yourself for the end of the world
Quickly take me by the hand
Damn all these fools and all of their promises
Of propping up our stand
Deny them in the heat of call
And make them understand with our hand and say…I am

View Of A Pig

I am watching you
You are buying and selling our homes and lands
Without one thought of whose life you destroy
I am watching you
No feelings or morals
You use people for your desire
Blinded by progress
Humanitarian feelings are no more
I am watching you
You who consumes more than you need
Afraid of the likes of me
You are truly a pig
Fat and pathetic
I am watching you

Voice Of Command

On the line the whole rank stops
Given to explain
Its military judgment
On the line standing in the rank
Under the equipment
Seeming to take root
On the line back into the action
The orders and the threatening
Are the rumbles of approval
On the line cold hearted smile
Snapping to attention
To the voice of command
Weak and ignorant
Voice of command

Welcome Land

On the way back home
Fantasy seduces you
Into a trance you roam
Leave behind the fears that hold you
Back to where you’re born
The Welcome Land of joy surrounds you
Underneath the dome
You spend your life forgetting that you’re free
Through the fire storm
Compelled by nature to relax
Into a world we’re thrown
Far behind the dreams that led us there
Before we’re shown
The Welcome Land of joy provides
A life you’ve never known
And spend that life forgetting that you’re free

Listen to me if you can - Listen to me if you know
Listen to me with your mind - Listen to me with your soul
Splish splash - Splish splash - Splish splash - Splish splash

Unfolded and now grown
This fantasy will not seduce you
Deep in the danger zone
And leave behind those fears that haunt you
Go back to where you’re born
The Welcome Land of joy enchants you
Roll away the stone
Remembering the fact that you are free
Splish splash - Splish splash - Splish splash - Splish splash

Waves

I am not the undertow
I respire gently
In they come and out they go
Diamonds are not plenty
I can’t believe where I’ve
Is it really through me
In it drown the sea I swim
Waves all around me
‘Cause I am not the undertow
You can live without me
I have lived some years before
See the past surround me
If I listen to the pavement
I can hear them laughing
So I go on and be the same
They cannot change me
‘Cause I am not the undertow

When The Hammer Falls

You’ll take the hard ride home
You’ll lose all that you’ve grown
You’ll have just what you’ve known
When the hammer falls
I’ll pause for one last time
And find that all is fine
With my love forever mine
When the hammer falls
We’ll see the stars at night
We’ll see them shine so bright
This will be our soul’s delight
When the hammer falls
Our dreams will set us free
Bright days are all we’ll see
This world belongs to you and me
When the hammer falls
I can take you far inside
You no longer have to hide
Like a cat without its claws
Like a dog forever lost
I’ll take the long way back
I’ll mend all that is cracked
I’ll throw it all in my pack
When the hammer falls
We’ll work and live and love
We’ll see the sun above
And we will never have enough
When the hammer falls
We’ll take the soft ride home
We’ll reap all that we’ve grown
We’ll have more than we’ve known
When the hammer falls
You’ll pause for one last time
You’ll see that all is fine
You are forever mine
When the hammer falls

Whispered Dreams

A world of whispered dreams
Planets there for us to see
Glittering sheets of gold pave the sea
Soft grasses; downy smooth
Skies are filled with brilliant hues
This hurried night melting in the dew
A night of whispered dreams
Plastic thoughts for all to spy
Colourful trails of light fill the sky
Still waters; glassy smooth
Streets are packed with clowns that rule
This measured time is drifting with the dew

Who's Suffering NOw

Like a liberated dove – I fly through the sky
To bring balance, peace and love
Then breathe the reason why
You come across so aggravating
Let’s end the war; I’m tired of waiting
I ask of you to tell me
Who’s suffering now

Like an ear to the ground – I listen to the words
Let go and start to fall
Don not wait to take your turn
You bring about so much complication
There is no need to feel this hatred
I ask of you to tell me
Who’s suffering now

Like an ordinary man – I travel through the day
And with every step I plan
To unravel what they say
You defy all sense of passion
Void of thought; drenched in confusion
I ask of you to tell me
Who’s suffering now

You hide your face and lose your anger
You make the claim I’ll burn forever
But still I ask of you to tell me
Who’s suffering now

Like sand upon the shore – I move with the wind
Though the surf does take a toll
It won’t make my heart sink
You think you can end this magic
Then how come your life is so tragic
Though I ask you will not tell me
Who’s suffering now

Windsor's Holiday

Oh how do you feel
To be born again
To be stoned again
And when it all turns real
Do you shy away
From another day
Where do you conceal
Where your thoughts do lie
Do they satisfy
All you are seeing here
Is our way to pay
For Windsor’s holiday

War (the world's only hygiene)

War, war, the glorification of war
Destruction of culture
Hate against women
Worship of speed
Unfolding and growing
